Outgrowing the Old You: You Don’t Need Everyone to Understand
Have you ever felt like you needed everyone around you to understand why you're changing?
Why you're saying no. Why you're pulling back. Why you're starting something new. Why something that once fit your life suddenly doesn't fit anymore.
In this solo episode of The You Are More Podcast, Amy Wienands talks about what happens when you begin outgrowing the old version of yourself—and why you don't need everyone around you to understand your growth.
Sometimes the hardest seasons to leave aren't the obviously bad ones. Nothing is necessarily wrong. Something simply doesn't feel right anymore. You may have outgrown the role, the expectation, the commitment, or even the identity you've been carrying.
Amy talks about how people often build expectations around the version of you they've always known: the one who always says yes, fixes everything, carries the load, answers every call, and keeps everyone happy.
Then you change.
And suddenly your growth changes their access to you.
That can create guilt, especially if you're used to being the one everyone depends on. But Amy reminds us:
You can love people and still disappoint them. You can be generous and still have boundaries. You can be kind and still say no.
This episode also dives into why we over-explain our decisions. Sometimes we're not actually explaining—we're hoping the other person will give us permission to move forward.
But there are seasons when you simply have to say:
“This is the decision I believe is right for this season.”
You don't have to become angry, defensive, or cold. You can simply become settled.
Peace doesn't mean everyone agrees with you.
Amy also challenges you to ask where you're staying stuck because you're afraid someone won't understand. Maybe they'll say you've changed.
Maybe they're right.
You're supposed to grow. You're supposed to evolve. You're supposed to become.
Change can be uncomfortable, even when it's good. Every season shift can initially feel like loss. But holding onto an old season simply because it's familiar can keep you from stepping into what God is doing next.
So ask yourself:
Is what I'm currently giving my time, energy, and effort to aligned with who I'm becoming and where I believe God is leading me?
At the end of the day, you're not responsible for everyone's opinion of your life.
You're responsible for what you do with your one life.
Sometimes becoming who God wants you to be means being misunderstood.
You don't need everyone's permission.
You don't need everyone's approval.
And you definitely don't need everyone to understand.
Keep moving. Keep growing. Keep becoming.
